About The Department

The Department of Psychology was established in 2016 with an aim of developing understanding of the discipline of psychology and promoting skill based education. An important goal of the department is to facilitate self-discovery in the students and ensure their enthusiastic and effective participation in responding to the needs and challenges of the contemporary world. The department intends to enable students in developing skills and competencies required for holistic development. Currently, the Department offers three-year B.A. (Hons.) program and two-year M.A. program along with UGC-NET (NTA-NET) coaching classes in Psychology.The Department of Psychology also offers PhD program related to various research and application areas of psychology. Students are also given internship programs in various areas of psychology. The teaching pedagogy is student centric and professionally moduled. In addition to lecturing as the primary mode of instruction, teaching is also interactive with due emphasis on seminar, presentations and discussions and also experiential exercises and peer mentoring. Psychological laboratory of the department is furnished with modern psychological test and apparatus where students learn psychometric assessment of intelligence, personality, perception, aptitude and career, mental health, motivation and emotions, other educational and psychological attributes.

Department is fully equipped with well qualified and trained faculty members. Most of the faculty members rewarded with doctoral degrees with the specialization in diverse fields of psychology such as Clinical Psychology, Counseling Psychology, Organizational Psychology, Positive Psychology Personality Psychology, Health Psychology etc and published high quality research papers in journals of national and International repute.

Moreover, the Department organizes “Mano-vistaar” , a Psycho-fest to provide the common platform to the students to enrich the knowledge and application of psychology at ground level including activities such as Mono-act, Psychodrama, learn-by-fun activities, photography competition etc. From time – to – time, the Department organizes workshops, seminars and invited lectures by eminent psychologists and professors from different institutions at national level. The psychology society- “Weavers of Psychology” often organizes competitions such as Poster making, Rangoli making, slogan writing, Face painting , quiz, debate competitions etc. based on psychological themes.

To flourish the professional training of the students, the Department of Psychology also organizes visit to psychiatric hospitals, Drug de-addiction centres which stimulates the understanding of application of theoretical perspective into real-world simulations. Students are also provided with opportunities to visit educational and religious tours. Department of psychology also offers one – month Psychology Internship to the Post-graduate students of the department to seek professional skills before entering the world-of-work in the field of psychology.

Despite the above, the Department of Psychology also organizes community outreach programs such as play performance of Mental Hygiene, Drug abuse, Social-Stigma and promoting psychological well-being in the nearby villages of Bathinda and Mansa region. After completion of the Post-graduate from the department, students can follow their career in various professions such as counselor, psychologist, social worker, psychotherapist, vocational trainer, interventionist, Women and Child protection officers in Government and private sector.

Course Ph. D
Duration 3 Years
Remarks
  • Any candidate who has passed the Master’s examination in Psychology with a score of not less than 60% or CGPA of 6.0 on a 10 point scale or equivalent (55% or 5.5 CGPA for SC/ST/BC Category) marks in aggregate, or have appeared in the final year examination of Master’s degree in the subject concerned from Akal University, Talwandi Sabo or from any other University (approved by the appropriate Academic Bodies of A.U.), shall be eligible to appear for the Ph.D. entrance test.
  • The students who have qualified UGC-NET/GATE/JEST or any similar examination/test conducted by a notified authority of the Government of India for the purpose, will be exempted from Ph.D. entrance test.
