About The Department

The Department of Botany was established in the year 2015. The vision behind establishing the department is to become one of the centres of eminence in Plant Sciences by providing value-based world class education besides developing scientific and technical temper among the students. Our mission is to strive for an excellent environment for learning and research in Botany and produce graduates, post graduates and Ph.D equipped with skills necessary to fulfil their role in contemporary society.

The department at present has 7 faculty members having expertise in thrust areas of research in Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Physiology, Taxonomy, Systematics, Mycology, Plant Pathology and Ecology. Their contributions are evident through their high quality research publications in reputed national & international journals.

Currently, the department offers three year B.Sc. (Medical) degree and two years M.Sc. (H) degree in Botany. The Department also offers Ph.D. programmes in various research areas of basic and applied botany.

In addition, the Department organizes workshops, seminars and invited lectures by eminent botanists for students and teachers in frontier areas of plant sciences on a regular basis under the botanical society – La Societe Botanique. The society organizes monthly presentations by B.Sc. and M.Sc (H) students followed by exhaustive discussion. The society is also involved in grooming the students by organizing various extra-curricular activities like Quiz competitions, Model & Poster making, Rangoli competitions, Debates and Declamations.

Course Ph. D
Duration 3 Years
Remarks
  • Any candidate who has passed the Master’s examination in Botany with a score of not less than 60% or CGPA of 6.0 on a 10 point scale or equivalent (55% or 5.5 CGPA for SC/ST/BC Category) marks in aggregate, or have appeared in the final year examination of Master’s degree in the subject concerned from Akal University, Talwandi Sabo or from any other University (approved by the appropriate Academic Bodies of A.U.), shall be eligible to appear for the Ph.D entrance test.
  • The students who have qualified CSIR-NET (JRF)/GATE or any similar examination/test conducted by a notified authority of the Government of India for the purpose, will be exempted from Ph.D entrance test.
