About The Department
The Department of Zoology is a constituent entity of the Faculty of Science, Akal University, Talwandi Sabo. The motto of the Department is to promote the quality education and establishment of high standards in the field of education and research. Since its inception in 2015, the Department is well equipped with teaching aids and research laboratories. At present, the department offers two years M.Sc. (H) & three years B.Sc. (Medical) program in Zoology. The Department also offers Ph.D. programmes in various research areas of basic and applied Zoology. There are separate laboratories for under-graduate and post-graduate students and research scholars. The Department has highly competent and efficient faculty members with research expertise in various thrust areas including Animal Physiology, Cell and Molecular Biology, Fish and Fisheries, Aquatic Biology, Animal Toxicology, Cytogenetics, Taxonomy and Biosystematics, Entomology & Parasitology etc. The Department offers free CSIR-NET (Life Sciences) training as a mandatory exercise for M.Sc. Students.
Apart from academic activities, the Department also organizes seminars and invited lectures by eminent Zoologists and Environmentalists on a regular basis through the departmental platform “Akal Zoological Society”. The society organizes fortnightly Power Point presentations by B.Sc. and M.Sc. students to impart subject knowledge and cognitive skills. Other extra-curricular activities like Quiz competitions, Model & Poster making, stone painting, Debates, Declamations, educational tours etc. are also organized by the society for developing scientific temper among the students.
The Department of Zoology at AU offers three main courses that have contemporary relevance, so that our students acquire skills that are highly desirable in the workplace. We have a very high student placement and success rate and the department’s academic staff is exceptionally well qualified (all 8 staff members have doctorates, and expertise in their specialized disciplines). Our particular research strengths are in the fields of Fish Taxonomy, Aquatic biology, Insect Taxonomy and Animal Physiology.
