The department of English Studies reflects the expansion, diversification and confluences both at the institutional level and in the dynamic disciplinary fields of literary and cultural studies. The objective of the department is to help students see themselves as professionals, as part of a discipline with skills and abilities valuable in teaching, research, publishing and business. Further, the department aims to give students a sense of themselves as citizens of a larger community by encouraging participation in service of learning. Currently the department offers B.A. (Hons. School) English and M.A. English. These programmes have also come to limelight for their unique design and relevance in the contemporary Indian as well as International literary scenario.

Duration of the B.A. English (Hons) program is six semesters (three years). The program intends to

  • train students in communication skills in English.
  • introduce students to the tools of literary scholarship.
  • strengthen their ability to analyze all forms of literary expression.
  • prepare them for careers and higher education.

Duration of M.A. program is four semesters. It enables students to develop a holistic understanding of literatures in English. It also introduces the students to the tools of research and broadens their critical sensibilities. Further, it equips them for career opportunities as well as for further research.

The department also offers Ph.D. program in various research areas of language, literary and cultural studies.

The department has highly competent and efficient faculty members with diversity of research interests. The faculty of English Studies has various national and international research collaborations. To enhance the competency of the students, in addition to the classroom lectures, the department also utilizes seminars, workshops and invited lectures as integral part of academic programme.

The department also provides acute mentoring of the students both in and beyond the classroom in a wide variety of forums. These activities promote a healthy holistic development of the student. Moreover, the department has a club “AN EXTENDED HAND” for helping the weak students in improving their English language skills. As an extension of this initiative, to provide a platform to students for mutual exchange of ideas, knowledge and skills, the department has also started the programme “WE WILL”.
