RURAL MENTAL HEALTH CAMP (30th September, 2016)

The Department of Psychology organised a rural camp for Mental health awareness at Fategarh Naubaad, District Bathinda, Punjab on 30th September, 2016. The aim of the camp was to spread much needed awareness about the psychiatric disorders and the fallouts of superstitious ways of managing such illnesses. The students were made to visit village school, common places like “sath”, anganwadi and households. Two assistant professors accompanied the students during the visit. During the school visit, teachers were made aware of learning difficulties and retention problems in young children. They were also apprised of the problems associated with different developmental levels. The teachers were requested to keep in mind the developmental limits of children in culminating various age bound tasks. Next, the team visited the villagers at the common meeting place called “sath”. The villagers were very enthused to discuss mental health issues with the students. The students used charts to demonstrate various issues to the villagers. The discussion was very productive and various reasons of mental stress were identified viz., unevenness of seasonality, debts (in farmers) and interpersonal conflicts. The villagers were apprised of availability of psychologist at various mental health centres in and around Bathinda. The activity was very useful for the students and the department of psychology looks forward to such endeavours in the near future.

International Women's Day We know from history lessons that International Women’s Day was initially established as a sign of women’s equality and strength. Nowadays women are really strong and independent, but March 8th is the day when we honour and cherish these strong women . To celebrate the event , Department of Psychology along with Department of Economics and Competetive Studies invited Ms. Pooja Chanwaria, SDM ,Ratia to give a motivational talk to the students. The event was preceded by a discussion on changing contexts of Feminity. It was a great success and the impact was observed from the sound of applause
